Maxwell's Lost Again

learned lessons, unfollowed directions

Back in Bangkok (Jan 18, 2023)

We have, essentially, a 24 hour layover here in Bangkok. The first order of business was food, some light shopping at MBK (possibly my favorite shopping place on earth), and pop a shot in the arcade at the mall. Owen dusted me. Apparently he has spent all his time in Asia learning Thai and perfecting pop a shot.

Meeting Owen’s friends in Chiang Mai was probably the highlight of my entire trip thus far. He plays music with a guy named Dave, a 42 year old American who went to High School in Thailand along with his two brothers. They are all three in Chiang Mai due to some family health issues, as their parents still live here. Owen is helping one of the brothers color-grade a documentary about a Thai Kickboxer who has a metal plate in her head, Judy. After a night of spicy food, pool, and enough beers to kill an ox, the director brother invited me to his filmmakers collective to see a presentation from a Hong Kong guy who’s made three micro budget feature films in the last four years. We watched his presentation and chatted about all of our wide ranges of experiences trying to make movies. I also met a New York Times travel writer there and was fortunate enough to get his contact info, as well as some tips for Vietnam. The Ha Giang trail looks like it’s going to be an absolute highlight. My lowlight of Chiang Mai? My AC going out on my final night. Somehow I manage.

Hopefully it all gets exciting from here. Just wanted to give an update after the most relaxed leg of the trip.
